Metal Finishing

Metal finishing changes the surface of metals to be able to resist corrosion by rusting. The damage to metals can come through normal wear and tear, chemicals, and air pollutants. There are several choices for metal finishing that can be used to change the surface of the metal so it will be able to resist damage.

Types of Finishes Available:

  • Bright Annealed

  • #2B Mill Finish

  • #3 Finish

  • #4 Satin

  • #6 Satin

  • #6 Satin Long Grain or Hairline

  • #6 Stain Non-Directional or Angel Hair

  • #7 Prebuff

  • #8 Mirror

  • #8 Super or Non-Directional Mirror

#4 Satin Finish

  • Industry standard satin finish

  • Refined and has a smoother finish than #3

  • Final polish uses 120-180 grit abrasive belts

#7 Prebuff

  • Highly reflective

  • Finely ground surface is buffed  but grit lines are not removed

Bright Annealed

  • Produced by heat-treating in a controlled atmosphere furnace

  • Bright, reflective appearance

  • Might have some cloudiness and other imperfections

  • Copper

  • Muntz / Naval

  • Stainless Steel

#2B Mill Finish

  • Unpolished cold rolled material obtained from a producing mill

  • Exhibits a slight luster but no reflectivity

#6 Satin Finish

  • Appearance is finer and smoother than #4

  • Final polish uses 240-320 grit abrasive belts

#8 Mirror

  • Industry standard for a highly reflective, mirror appearance

  • Buffed directionally with abrasive compounds in several stages followed by buffing with a rouge compound

#3 Finish

  • Polished on a wide belt machine using coated abrasive belts

  • Coarser appearance due to final polishing with 100-120 girt abrasive belts

#6 Satin Long Grain

or Hairline

  • A #6 Satin that received additional polishing giving the appearance that the grain runs continuously for the entire length of the product

#8 Super or

Non-Directional Mirror

  • Highly specialized finish

  • Buffed by circular oscillating first with abrasive compounds, then secondly with a rouge-like compound.

#6 Satin Non-Directional or Angel Hair

  • Random orbital finish

  • Sanded with coated abrasive pads with no specific direction of grain
