Alloy Steel

Alloy steel is steel combined with a variety of other metals or minerals such as chromium, cobalt, copper, manganese, molybdenum, nickel, tungsten or vanadium to obtain desirable physical and chemical properties such as higher strength and durability. Alloy steel is also more resistant to corrosion.

300M Very High-Strength Alloy Steel

  • Modified 4340 Steel for high yield strength

  • Applications include torsion bars and drive shafts

  • Normalized for consistent hardening and machining

  • Hardness:  Rockwell C23

  • Can be heat treated to Rockwell C54

  • Meets ASTM A579

41L40 Easy-To-Machine

Alloy Steel

  • Lead added for fast machining

  • Cold drawn

  • Smooth finish

  • Medium hardness (Rockwell B96)

  • Can be heat treated to Rockwell C34

  • Meets ASTM A108

C300 Ultra Impact-Resistant Alloy Steel

  • ​Also known as Maraging Steel and VascoMax

  • Excellent impact and compression resistance

  • Used for die and tooling applications

  • Hardness: Rockwell C30

  • Can be heat treated to Rockwell C55

4150 Wear-Resistant

Alloy Steel

  • Includes more carbon than 4140/4142 Alloy Steel making it more wear resistant

  • Applications include gears, shafts & ball screws

  • Medium hardness (Rockwell B90)

  • Can be heat treated to Rockwell C63

  • Meets ASTM A29, A108

4130 Easy-To-Weld

Alloy Steel

  • Low carbon for good weldability

  • Abrasion and impact resistant

  • Applications include gears, fasteners & structural applications

  • Medium hardness (Rockwell B85)

  • Can be heat treated to Rockwell C55

4340 High-Strength Impact-Resistant Alloy Steel

  • Use for applications involving extreme impact, heat and wear

  • Hardness: Rockwell C27

  • Can be heat treated to Rockwell C53

4140/4142 Multipurpose Alloy Steel

  • Also known as Chrom-Moly Steel

  • Applications include gears, axles, shafts, collets and dieholders

  • Fracture resistant

  • Abrasion and impact resistant when hardened

  • Available annealed (Rockwell B90) or heat treated (Rockwell C 28/32)

  • Can be heat treated to Rockwell C60

  • Meets ASTM A29, A108

  • Contains nickel, chromium and molybdenum for abrasion resistance

  • Hardness: Rockwell B85

  • Can be heat treated to Rockwell C60
